The situation is eerily similar to Peter’s encounter with Simon the magician described in the eighth chapter of the book of Acts, right down to the stern warning that Paul issues to the man: “You son of the devil, you enemy of all righteousness, full of all deceit and villainy, will you not stop making crooked the straight paths of the Lord?” (Acts 13:10).
